Statement on the Events in Charlottesville, Virginia
Yesterday was a horrible day for America: a white nationalist demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned violent, leaving thirty-two-year-old Heather Heyer dead and nineteen others injured. These events bring to mind a similar horror that struck our own community in May, when a white supremacist harassed two young women and then stabbed three men who came to their defense, killing two.
Today, we find ourselves in the aftermath of right-wing terror again. As Democrats and citizens of Multnomah County, we firmly unite against all that white supremacists and neo-nazis seek to promote. We are committed to protecting our most vulnerable citizens and ensuring safety and equity in Multnomah County and across the country.
