At the January 31 “Labor against ICE” rally in Southwest Portland, ICE officers shot teargas and other crowd control munitions on hundreds of peaceful protesters, well before most of the marchers even arrived in the area. Several Multnomah County Democrats were among those injured that day.

The right to protest is fundamental. No government should be allowed to restrict free speech or free assembly. At the February 12 Central Committee meeting, the Democratic Party of Multnomah County confirmed solidarity with more than 30 labor unions that participated in the march on January 31. The committee passed a resolution strongly condemning ICE’s actions. MultDems call on Oregon’s Congressional delegation to replace ICE with new federal agencies. Barring that, they urge our reps to ban ICE from interfering with elections and to keep ICE funding at base levels.
