At our May 14th meeting, the Multnomah County Democrats passed Resolution 2026-10, calling on Senator Chuck Schumer to step down as Senate Democratic Leader and urging the Senate Democratic Caucus to elect leadership that truly reflects the values and priorities of the Democratic base.

This resolution comes at a critical moment. A brand-new New York Times/Siena poll found that 70% of Americans are dissatisfied with the Democratic Party. That number should alarm every Democrat who wants to win in November and beyond. We believe that dissatisfaction is, in no small part, a failure of leadership.

Our resolution documents the ways in which Senator Schumer has fallen short. On the global stage, he has failed to lead a unified caucus in challenging the Trump administration on a range of urgent crises including the genocide in Gaza, an erratic foreign policy that has alienated our allies, sweeping and damaging tariffs, the gutting of USAID, and the war with Iran.

On the domestic front, he has failed to lead on any of the defining battles: defending health care subsidies, pushing back on DOGE’s destruction of federal agencies, standing up to the domestic terror inflicted by ICE, or offering the country a compelling economic alternative to Trumpism.

Leadership requires accountability. The Multnomah County Democrats are calling on Senators Wyden and Merkley to support new Senate Democratic leadership that will unite our party, speak to the urgent challenges of this moment, and, ultimately, win elections.
