MultDems! Here are our suggestions for how to be an effective activist right now.

1. Add your elected officials contact info to your phone. We’ve provided a Multnomah County starter list below. Now when you want to follow up on a call to action, you are ready to go.
   
2. Pick your top issues. You can’t do it all. Your focus will depend on your relative security in this new fascist environment See our summary of key issues and resources below. We’ll add more over the coming months.
   
3. Pick your key information sources for your issues. Have you decided to make an impact for immigrant rights? Bookmark key, credible sources and decide your schedule for keeping up. Pick your role and work it into your schedule. This will allow you to step away from the headlines and outrage cycle, and support your own goals with focused sustainable energy. (We’ll be posting some resources suggestions this week.
   
4. Develop your local network. It’s imperative to connect with likeminded people with common goals. We need each other. If the structure that a county democratic party provides makes sense to you, fill out the MultDems volunteer form. If that’s not your thing, pick an established high-impact organization and connect. We can not get through this alone.
   
5. Reach out for help. This situation is no joke. If your status and rights are at risk, connect with organizations that are geared up to help. If you or someone you love is at risk of deportation call the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC) hotline at 1-888-622-1510. If you are a transgender person who needs to make a connection and a plan call the TransLifeline at US (877) 565-8860 to talk over next steps. 

How to influence your elected representatives

Be prepared. Add the contact numbers below to your phone contacts list. Keep your message brief, and focus on one or two issues. Staffers tabulate voter positions and calls. Be sure to let your reps know that you are a voter who lives in their district. If you voted for them, let them know! 

Meet in person or call. Government insiders advise that making phone calls and speaking up at public events are the most effective ways to get attention and results. Find out when your local reps are appearing live. Add town hall meetings where your reps will appear to your calendar, and attend. Staffers say that although emails and letters make a difference, calls and in-person conversations are the way to go. mul
