Michael C. Smith – 2017 Candidate for Technology Officer

Bio

I have fifteen years of experience in Information Technology and Masters degrees in both Mathematics (Loyola University, Chicago, 1998) and Computer Science (Portland State, 2008). I was born and raised in Chicago by two parents who were both staunch anti-Daley Machine Democrats, and moved to Portland in 1999 to be with close friends. I have been married for ten years to local woodcut artist Liv Rainey-Smith; we are both active in the Lovecraft and Bizarro communities. I consider myself a Howard Dean Democrat.

Political Experience

This is my first time running for an elected office other than PCP. I canvassed for the Howard Dean and John Kerry campaigns in 2004, the Rob Brading campaign in 2006, and the Obama and Jeff Merkley campaigns in 2008.

Vision for the Multnomah County Democratic Party

We have a lot of work to do to clean up our IT systems. If elected I will establish a committee of volunteers to inventory our systems, and to divide and conquer the workload. In particular, we will make our website easier to use and navigate, particularly for mobile device and differently abled users. We will expand the MCD’s presence on social media. We will offer training so officers and LDLs can better use our systems.

Dan Fulton – 2017 Candidate for Technology Officer

Bio

I am a computational physicist, working towards the goal of clean fusion energy. My background in science has made me a passionate climate advocate. Data analysis and data visualization are regular parts of my job, and I firmly believe in data-driven policy. I grew up in SE Portland, and after spending time away for college and graduate school, recently moved back to Portland to be close to family and give back to the community. In my spare time, I enjoy homebrewing and cat photos.

Political Experience

From 2009-2015, as a doctoral student at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), I maintained servers for my research group, performing hardware maintenance, configuring the software environment, and maintaining user access. I also helped design and maintain websites for faculty using content management systems. I served in the UCI graduate student governing body, Associated Graduate Students, as the Chair of the Pub Advisory Board, where I addressed issues of pub safety and preserved student government funding, and as a member of the AGS Executive Committee, as the Community Development Director to focus on engaging constituents.

Vision for the Multnomah County Democratic Party

If elected as Technology Officer by MCDCC, I would prioritize (1) redesign of the Multnomah Democrats website with PC and mobile formats to improve site accessibility and ease of content management, and (2) automation of party data acquisition/storage for better access control and day-to-day use. I would also like to reassess party web presence (website, email lists, social media) and provide instructional resources for PCPs to establish and maintain their own individual web presences. To accomplish these and other goals, I would recruit a committee of technical volunteers.

 

Linda Livermore – 2017 Candidate for Treasurer

Bio

I grew up in Gresham, Oregon and attended Gresham High School. I attended Mt Hood Community College 1 year, Anchorage Community College my 2nd year, and graduated from the University of Oregon, with a BS in Economics with a focus in Urban and Resource Economics. I went on to complete a post-bac program in accounting at Portland State University. My work experience includes Public Accounting/audit, tax preparation, and work in Wood Products, Banking and Manufacturing industries. I have additional training in Non-violent Communication and Permaculture, concepts that influence my work and interactions. I have a talent for communicating financial and related information in a clear, user friendly format. Relevant accomplishments and personal information: • CPA & Small business owner for 26 years • Past member of the Conflict Resolution Committee of the Oregon Society CPAs • Chairperson of the Harvest Festival for Portland Village Charter School • Parent volunteer managing school fundraisers, including accounting for funds • Single parent of 2 sons: Adam 26, Jonah 18, as well as 1 wonderful Golden Retriever, 1 cat and 1 bearded dragon • “Cross pollinator” : I enjoy meeting new people and sharing insights and information My hobbies include gardening, camping, canoeing, biking and reading.

Political Experience

I am a life long Democrat. This year I was a delegate for the district convention, active with Bernie Pdx, participated with phone banking, canvased for Yes on 97 and campaigned for Chole Eudaly for City Council. I was appointed a PCP for HD 42 in September 2016. As a new PCP, I distributed slate cards and attended all recent events for MCDCC and HD 42. As a dedicated PCP and a CPA with 36 years of experience, I look forward to utilizing my professional expertise to support progressive values and the activities and mission of the Multnomah County Democratic Party.

I am excited to be part of Multnomah Dems at this time in history. I expect it to be a time of challenge and perhaps frustration, but also a time of potential to develop new strategies, strength and resilience to promote programs that improve peoples lives. I support an organizational structure that is respectful, transparent and inclusive. I will assist in encouraging more engagement and collaboration among all our members and our community. I want to see us get a lot done and have fun while we do it. I see us increasing our outreach, communication and involvement with our community through a variety of activities, including community service and public events. I’d also like to see us involved with local high schools, promoting civic interest and engagement as well as listening to students, hearing their perspective and concerns related to politics and community life.

Lurelle Robbins – 2017 Candidate for Chair

Bio

* I was Born and raised in conservative Malheur County–a farm boy – milking cows and driving tractor. * I have been a democrat in philosophy ever since I first voted for John Kennedy as a first grader. * I learned Parliamentary Procedure in the FFA along with many other skills. * I derive my empathy and value of fair treatment from reflection on the discrimination I observed toward the Japanese, the migrant workers and anybody politically liberal in my school and community. * I gained understanding from my own work place discrimination experiences as a member of the LGBTQ community. * I am a graduate of Oregon State University, BS in Agricultural Economics. * I was a 4 year member of the famed OSU Marching Band – attention to detail mattered. * I learned to maintain a calm presence under pressure and in the face of angry tax payers as Real Estate Appraiser and Data Analyst with the Malheur and Linn County Assessor. * As a Paramedic of 22 years: I have delivered babies, comforted families in the aftermath of the loss and cared for heroin overdose victims, gunshot and stabbing victims and those living in downtown hotels and on the streets. * I stood on steps of the Supreme Court serving as Safety Monitor during the “Act of Civil Disobedience” at the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. * In the absence of a union, I organized for wages and working conditions for employees at Malheur County and later for Paramedics of MSI in Albany. * As spokesperson for the Paramedics in Albany, I interacted with City Council members and the Media. * I have been unfairly terminated and challenged civil service procedures of the Albany Fire Department. * I gained meeting leadership experience as Chair of Oregon State Paramedic Association. I coordinated 2 employee/employer contract negotiations. * I am a PCP, House District Leader, State Central Committee Delegate, Past Co-chair of Community Action and have served as 1st Congressional District Secretary and Treasurer. * As a leader I work behind the scenes to allow others to achieve their goals. I am calm and dedicated to making peoples lives better.

Political Experience

I have been active in the Multnomah Democratic Party since 2004. I have served as a PCP, HD Leader, and Secretary and Treasurer of the 1st Congressional District. I was a member of the 1st CD involved in the appointment of Suzanne Bonamici to replace David Woo. I have been a member of City Club and serve on the Health and Public Safety Issues Forum as co-chair. We have hosted former Governor Kitzhaber and Don Berwick in a discussion of or Health Care System. We host ongoing discussions on human trafficking. I served on the Task Force on Children,s Dental Health. I attended meetings of the Uptown Democratic Club and the San Diego Democratic Caucus. I was involved in the initial launch party and successful campaign of Christine Kehoe for City Council, 1993. She became the first openly gay city official. I hosted a fundraiser for Diane Feinstein. Vision for the Multnomah County Democratic Party

I envision of party of activist democrats with many passions working toward the goals, mission and Platform of Mulnomah County Democrats. We are at the precipice of a new era requiring diligence as we learn to trust one another while working to bring our many disparate ideas and personalities to a growing, active, and vibrant party. We will become a model of liberal, progressive, passionate people standing up to the challenges of a Trump presidency. We will be ready, we must be ready to take back the senate and congress in 2018. Yet, as Multnomah Democrats we must stay focused here at home on issues of opportunity and living wages, homelessness and mental health care, the environment and all social issues that appear to be under attack. We can and I will facilitate the advancement of the five purposes of the Multnomah County Democrats: 1.Organize Democrats within Multnomah County; 2. Develop, adopt and support a party platform; 3. Elect Democratic candidates; 4. Represent Democrats at the Congressional District and State Central Committees; 5. Promote the positive exchange of ideas through education and debate.

Leslie Davis – 2017 Candidate for 2nd Vice Chair

Bio

I was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in New Jersey and California. I am a Cradle Democrat; my parents met campaigning for Adlai Stevenson. At age 13, I traveled to San Francisco to participate in my first demonstration, a national mobilization to end the War in Vietnam. As a newly-enfranchised 18-year-old, I cast my first vote – for George McGovern. I studied history and comparative politics in college and graduate school, left academia in 1981, worked briefly as a technical writer, and built a 20-year career in training and development. I am comfortable with public speaking, facilitation, project management, mentoring, and leadership roles that require flexibility and power sharing. I have served on the boards of Circle of Life Day Care (an agency of the Jewish Federation), the American Society for Performance Improvement, and the Cascadia Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (President, 2000). I was a copy editor, contributor (journalist), and editor of In Conversation, the print magazine of the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, 2006-2016. I moved to Portland in 1991 with my husband Bob and our baby daughter Rosie. We settled in NE PDX. Our son Jacob was born at OHSU in 1992. Both kids attended Portland Public Schools. Bob works in IT training for a trucking company based in Michigan, Jacob works as a cook at Widmer Brothers Brewery, and Rosie works as a Japanese Exchange Teacher in Sasebo, Japan. I currently teach severely dyslexic students as a Language Skills Therapist. As an environmentalist, I literally walk my talk. Our four-person family kept only one car. We made it through the Carpool Years (sports, drama camps, reading tutors, singing lessons, B’nai Mitzvah) and then sold our one car in early 2014. Three years car-free!

Political Experience

I was elected to the VC2 position in November 2015. There is a lot to learn! Predecessor Stephanie Nystrom worked hard to provide the party with excellent tools to process PCP appointments, prepare credentialing lists, and keep our records current. I maintain the database of 600+ PCPs. I lead the Credentials Committee – a skilled team of Assistant District Leaders – in the work of facilitating participation in the party. In December we welcomed 131 new PCPs! I was first elected as a PCP in 2010. I have served on the Executive Committee as Assistant District Leader (ADL-1/HD43, 2010-2013) and as Celsi Chair (2014). I currently serve on the Rules and Budget/Finance Committees. My district leader (the amazing Debbie Gordon, DL-45) calls me a model PCP – surveying our district in drive-throughs, taking dozens of photos, walking our district, rounding up canvassers for east county campaigns, and dropping hundreds of slate cards.

Vision for the Multnomah County Democratic Party

My ideas are simple. Let’s welcome every Democrat. Let’s hold meetings that are friendly, orderly, and productive. Let’s conduct the internal work of the Party with fairness and transparency. Let’s continue to provide active, enthusiastic support to our candidates. The party bylaws provide five pillars – not just one! Getting Democrats elected is important work. But so is organizing county Democrats at the neighborhood level. So is building and supporting an effective platform. So is representing us at SCC/CDC. And for me, personally, the most compelling one is the fifth pillar, promoting civic engagement through education and debate. As officers, district leaders, and committee chairs – we hold formal leadership titles. But we need to recognize that every PCP is a leader. Every volunteer deserves the opportunity to do meaningful work that matches their skills and time commitments. Let’s make sure every volunteer succeeds.

Bill Bradley – 2017 Candidate for Communications Officer

Bio

I founded Alive MMA, Brazilian Top Team Jiu Jitsu, Crossfit Woodstock, and Good Garbage Junk Removal, Hauling, and Recycling. Besides succeeding on a bottom line level, I am proud to say these are union represented, do-gooder enterprises consistent with my record of venture socialism. I have taught many hundreds of people least force necessary self defense. I served for many years as a member/owner of Laughing Horse Books. I founded the Red and Black Cafe, the Back to Back Cafe, and Portland Collective Housing. I have organized unions, lead bargaining teams, and helped win significant workplace improvements. I have organized and participated in direct action campaigns. I have also worked as a stand up comic and toured the country with a critically acclaimed one man play. I have raised a step daughter and a foster daughter. I am currently the guardian of a 15 year old gentleman.

Political Experience

I have been a field organizer and a campaign director for door to door political organizing. I have managed a campaign for County Commission. I have served as Vice President of two Neighborhood Associations and one Business Association. I have been very active as an organizer and activist for ecological wisdom, social justice, and economic democracy. I have taught, trained, and mentored organizers and presenters.

Vision for the Multnomah County Democratic Party

I believe democracy is power and that best way to strengthen our cause is to act with integrity. I want to rebuild and realign the party to the project of helping people win concrete improvements in our everyday lives, gaining a sense of our own power, and changing the relations of power with stronger, through face to face organizing. The communications strategy I will further is one of unhurried conversations to organize our Precincts, block by block. Our web, email, phone, and social media strategies should all support this practice. I want our party to become a powerful vehicle for people to look out for each other and make things better. I want us to be the party through which people help each other through organized mutual aid. I want us to develop leaders with a track record of accountability and service. I want us to get good at this so that we prove ourselves trustworthy. I am asking for your help and support.

Patch Adam Perryman – 2017 Candidate for Recording Secretary

Bio

I shall commit to efficiently prepare and maintain a permanent record of all minutes of the Multnomah County Democrats’ Central Committee, Administrative Committee, Executive Committee and any pro re nada (as needed) meetings undertaking official Party business. I was born in Eugene, raised in Coos Bay. I moved to Portland in June of 2002. My alma maters are Portland State University and OHSU, my 14 year-workplace as a surgical technologist and data analyst (BS-Science ’06, Masters Cert.-Public Admin. ’09; MS-Healthcare Management/Admin ’16). I volunteered with the Oregon Association of Surgical Technologists, quickly joining its non-profit Board first as a member, then Secretary and for two years as President from 2003 – 2006. These statewide roles were adjunct of the national Assembly, requiring me to report on membership interests, create legacy documents, and to organize/conduct dozens of meetings under Roger’s Rules. This work included event planning and project management for twice-a-year seminars for a delegation of a couple hundred surgical professionals. In 2011 my volunteering shifted circles upon becoming a member of the Timbers Army and in 2013 I added the Rose City Riveters (both under the non-profit 107 Independent Supporters Trust.) This culture teems with passionate and selfless people. Creatives who are dedicated and politically diverse; but, we set all differences aside to come together, celebrate our city and cheer on our clubs embracing our region’s do-it-yourself nature. These are the skills I wish to volunteer to our Party as Recording Secretary. My Illinois mother was a medical transcriptionist and taught me to type (90 wpm). My Oklahoma father was a pharmacist and he taught me to think empirically (“Know by Doing,” -Aristotle.) I’m Oregonian and asking for your vote to serve in this role not because it will be rewarded, but because it will reward us all. Thank you.

Vision for the Multnomah County Democratic Party

I see the Recording Secretary’s position as mostly neutral in terms of floor debate and decision making. This is a time to offer more light and less heat within our Party, and I want to help ensure that the lights don’t flicker while we listen and debate where it’s best to shine the brightest. I do want to coordinate one specific project with the Technology and Communications Officers: To craft and present an action plan to the Chair and other Officers that leads to modernizing MCD’s public documents into a streamlined, transparent, uniform and accessible product. I want to do this work as the recording secretary not because it will be rewarded but because it will be rewarding to the Party, its members and the citizens we all represent (and I admit it that I actually enjoy making forms, working in teams and getting sites to look and work great.)

At the ReOrganizational meeting, delegations for Multnomah’s reps to these Committees will be elected:

 

State Central Committee (SCC)  (20 delegates + 20 alternates)

3rd Congressional District  (CD) delegation  (18 delegates + 18 alternates)

1st  CD delegation  (3 delegates + 3 alternates)                     

5th  CD delegation  (2 delegates + 2 alternates)         

 

Eligibility to run:  Democratic registration status; residency in  Multnomah County, and for CDs, residency in the respective CD.

 

Eligibility to vote:  All of the above plus status as an elected or appointed PCP.

 

All Committee positions are gender balanced, i.e. equal #s of female and male slots are designated for each Committee.

SCC Description:

As an SCC delegate, you will be part of the “legislating body” for the Democratic Party of Oregon for the 2017-2018 term.    As one longtime activist said, the SCC is the heartbeat of the DPO.   SCC Meetings are held quarterly and scheduled on weekends.  While delegates are only required to attend the Sunday  SCC meeting itself, an SCC weekend  generally includes a full weekend of trainings,  a social event on Saturday night, and Caucus and Committee meetings.   

The 20 alternates elected are expected to attend SCC meetings as well, since they are often called upon to serve and vote in an absent delegate’s place.  Other than voting, alternates not “subbing”  for delegates may fully participate in  SCC meetings. The SCC meetings are held in various parts of the state, and delegation members must coordinate their own housing and transportation.

SCC delegation members elected for the 2017-2018 term will convene within 2 weeks after the ReOrg. to elect a Delegation Chair and to get a short orientation. (meeting TBD)

SCC delegates will also be asked to attend the February CD meeting of their respective CD in order to join with their CD delegation in selecting DPO Standing Committee members.  (CD meetings TBD)

CD Committees Description:

Oregon Congressional District Committees serve as a forum where delegates selected from multiple counties (by their central committees) can share ideas and take, and communicate, stands on the political issues of the day.  In those districts where the Member of Congress is a Democrat, they also meet with their Member of Congress, or a representative of their office, to discuss those issues and to learn about activities involving that member.  Most committees meet quarterly.
