What drives me to seek an elected position
Our state and our city have a lot of challenges right now when it comes to our roads and bridges, the affordablity of housing and paying rent, drug use and addiction, the funding needed for schools including community colleges and higher education and of course healthcare as it is also not affordable for too many people. I am very motivated to try to solve these problems as best as I can. I also care about doing what we can to mitigate climate change.
The first three priorities or issues I want to tackle
I will spend most of my time in the legislature trying to figure out how to mitigate and maintain our state’s Medicaid program—the Oregon Health Plan in light of the passage of HR1 last summer by the Republican controlled Congress and President Trump. I will support any effort to better fund our schools and work to get better outcomes for our children. I will work to support any effort to making housing and rent more affordable. We have to get a transportation package passed. Honestly, what ever we need to do to resist the worse of the Trump Administration I will support.
The experiences and insights I will bring to the office
I have been the state representative for HD 42 for over ten years. I understand a lot of complex policy areas especially health care and mental health and addiction and tax policy. I know how to pass bills and get support from my colleagues for things that will improve our state. I worked for two different labor unions before I joined the Oregon Legislature, and it gave me a lot of advacacy and negotiation skills.
What being a Democrat in Multnomah County means to me
Right now it means standing up for our city in light of the attacks on our city and our city’s values from the Trump administration as best as I can and joining with other elected leaders to do that. It also means working with our elected leaders to solve the problems of our city and our state as best as we can particularly around transporation, healthcare, education and climate.
