Diane Sykes

Candidate for:

Multnomah County Circuit Court - Position 2

What drives me to seek an elected position

I am deeply committed to public service. I am running for judicial office because I know that courts play a fundamental role in ensuring fairness, stability and access to justice for all. As a circuit court judge, I will foster a respectful and inclusive courtroom where every person—regardless of background—experiences a court system that operates with the highest level of integrity, regardless of the desired outcome. Over nearly three decades as an attorney, I have developed a broad and balanced perspective that prepares me well for the bench. My experience handling complex matters and working with individuals from all walks of life has prepared me to effectively manage a broad caseload in criminal and civil matters.

Appearing in court can be a daunting experience for clients. A core tenet of my practice has been to empower clients to understand the legal process and feel supported. As a judge, I will bring that same commitment to my work on the bench and strive to promote the community’s confidence in the legal system. I believe I am the best candidate because of my extensive litigation experience, sound judgment and balanced perspective, along with a deep commitment to upholding the rule of law.

The first three priorities or issues I want to tackle

My first priority is accountability—ensuring that decisions in my courtroom are consistent, transparent and grounded in the law. Second, I am committed to fairness. Every person who enters the courtroom deserves to be heard, respected and treated equally regardless of background or circumstance. That means carefully considering each case on its merits and working to eliminate bias wherever it exists. Finally, I will focus on delivering justice for all by balancing accountability with an understanding of the underlying issues many individuals face. The goal is not only to resolve cases, but to support outcomes that reduce reoffending and strengthen our community over time. Together, these priorities reflect my commitment to a court system that is just, fair and focused on long term public safety.
